Steel Leads Men with 5th Place Finish at IWU Spring Classic

The North Central Missouri College men's golf team traveled to Fort Madison, IA on Tuesday to compete in the Iowa Wesleyan University Spring Tiger Classic at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course. The Pirates competed with three individual scores in the 82 player field. Knox College out of Galesburg, IL won the team portion of the event firing a score of 298. "We saw some great competition today from the other schools we were up against. The course was in great shape for it only being open one week prior to the event and the guys had to play through some adversity with hurricane winds once again," detailed coach Nate Swann.

The Pirates had one golfer on the medal stand at the conclusion of play. Kyle Steel led NCMC firing a nice round of 75. That placed Steel in 5th place for the tournament out of 82 golfers with nine hole splits of 39-36. "Kyle finally matched his ball striking with his putting today and his score showed. His maturity is starting to grow a little and the weather conditions don't bother him so he kept his head down, stayed consistent and put together a terrific back nine to medal. In a perfect world I would have really liked him to play the par 3's better but I'm proud of the way he battled."

Cam Bates also put together a solid round for the Pirates shooting 78 which placed Bates T17th. "Cam had a nice round also and is starting to find his ball striking. He ran into some problems around the greens specifically with putting but it was a good learning opportunity and he is making a step in the right direction." Austin Lasher rounded out the Pirates scoring on Tuesday with an 18-hole score of 85. "Austin hit the ball well today; he just didn't score well. He has a few things to work out with the driver but the rest of his game is in good shape."

"The guys can't be content right now. They can take away the positives and continue to build off this because are schedule doesn't get any easier." The NCMC men will now turn their attention to the Park University Spring Classic at The Deuce Golf Club of Kansas City on April 4th and 5th.
