SWCC beats NCMC at “War at the Moor”

The NCMC Men's golf team had a quick turnaround as the travel back to Iowa on Friday to compete in the "War at the Moor" Fall Tournament hosted by Southwestern Community College. With only two teams at the event it turned into a Ryder Cup format for NCMC and SWCC. The Spartans swept the matches against the Pirates but every match was competitive and came down to the last few holes.

Cam Bates competed against the Spartans #1 Robin Persson in Match Play and it came down to the 18th hole with Persson taking the match 1UP. "Cam played some terrific golf on the back nine after falling into a 3 DOWN hole against his competitor. He took advantage of the opportunities and had three birdies and an eagle coming in to shoot a very respectable 75 which matched Persson's 75. The three putt on the 18th hole will haunt Cam for a little bit but it was nice to see him finally put his game together for 18 holes."

Kyle Steel and Austin Lasher was the next match out as they competed in true alternate shot against the SWCC #2 and #3. Steel and Lasher finished with a 79 and the team of Rooker and Stetson shot a 77. "Kyle and Austin played some really good alternate shot up until they took an 8 on the 16th hole of the match to take them out of it. They both had a lot of fun with this type of team format and will hopefully give them each some individual confidence moving forward."

Brayden Schweizer and Mason Moncrief competed in 18-hole stroke play against SWCC's #4 and #5 for their squad. Brayden shot a 79 which included 4 birdies but had a few too many bogeys as Thomas Esterhuyse of SWCC finished with a 77 and winning the match by two strokes. Moncrief was the last match out and he shot a 90 for NCMC and lost his match to Ethan Brumbaugh who fired a 77.

"The results don't look ideal on paper but I'm proud of all the guys for keeping their match tight throughout the day. 3 out of the 4 matches the guys had an opportunity to win but just couldn't quite get it done. SWCC has a ton of talent on their roster so it was fun to watch and hopefully we can get some redemption on them next year."
