Pirates Baseball Season Ends In Region Tournament; Sophomore Players Recognized

Pirates baseball finished their season with a mark of 19-33 following a pair of NJCAA Region XVI Tournament Series defeats to East Central College.  Final scores of the games were 11-1 and 5-3 in Saturday's doubleheader hosted at Burleigh Grimes Field.

Taking the loss on the mound in the opener was sophomore Tanner Schmidt (0-5).  He pitched 3 innings allowing 6 runs, 3 of which were earned.  At the plate, NCMC's bright spot was Edward Viloria who went 2-2 in the game.

Game two was much more closely contested with the Pirates jumping out to an early 1-0 lead following Noel Medina's RBI walk in the first inning to bring in Noah Bodenhausen who had single to start the game.  However, the Pirates left the bases loaded in the inning and were only able to secure the single run.

East Central posted a pair of runs in the 3rd and 4th innings off losing pitcher Layne Rutherford (2-6).  He tossed a total of 3.2 innings and struck out 5 Falcons.  Avery Rivero pitched well out of the bullpen the rest of the game for NCMC, allowing just a solo home run in the 7th, but the Pirates offense couldn't produce enough runs in their comeback bid.

Leading NCMC offensively in the game was Rutherford (3-5, 1 RBI), Viloria (2-4, 1 run) and Bodenhausen (2-5, 1 run).  The Pirates stuck out a total of 11 times in the game which proved to be a backbreaker as many came in key offensive situations.

In postgame ceremonies, All-Region selections were presented.  Earning 1st Team honors were sophomores Avery Rivero and Noah Bodenhausen.  2nd Team status was awarded to sophomore Arturo Brito and freshmen Layne Rutherford and Jesus Fonseca.

On Sunday, Pirates baseball hosted a ceremony to honor their sophomore players in the Ketcham Community Center.  8 of 9 sophomore Pirates graduated NCMC with their Associates degrees.  The following Pirates will be moving on from the program and the coaching staff wishes them best wishes in their future endeavors.
