Pirates Baseball Competes At Missouri S&T

Pirates Baseball recorded two ties and a one run loss Saturday on the road against Missouri University of Science and Technology.  Final scores for the games were 2-2, 6-5, and 6-6.  For the fall, the Pirates exhibition record is now 4-5-3.

"Playing 21 innings in a single day is a lot of baseball.  I thought our players did a good job of competing the entire day and maintaining their focus," commented Coach Hillerman after the three seven inning games.

In the opener, the Pirates got out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the 4th inning.  However, the Pirates surrendered one run in the bottom of the 4th and one in the bottom of the 6th which led to the 2-2 tie.

Game Two saw the Pirates again get on top of the Miners.  NCMC's big inning came in the 3rd where they plated 5 runs to take a commanding 5-1 lead.  They held that lead until allowing 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to hand Missouri S&T the walk off win.

Game Three had a different script.  The Pirates fell behind 4-0 after two innings and trailed the majority of the game.  However, in the top of the 6th inning the Pirates offense erupted to score 6 runs.  Going into the bottom of the last inning, the Pirates held a slim 6-5 lead.  The Miners were able to push across the tying run with the game ending in a 6-6 tie.

"It was a bit disappointing to have the lead in all three games and not come away with a win.  As a team, we have to learn how to take that last step in securing victories," stated Coach Suttenfield.

Offensively, the Pirates only scored in 3 of the 21 innings played.  As a team, the Pirates hit .222 on the day.  An offensive bright spot was sophomore Kendrick Delima 3 hits and 3 RBI's.  On the mound, the Pirates only surrendered 6 earned runs over 21 innings.  The defense committed 7 errors which proved to be costly.

Next up for the Pirates will be a road trip to Central Methodist University on Tuesday.
