Sophomore shortstop Enrique "Alex" Madera and sophomore catcher Jared Fry were recently selected to the All-Region Second Team for their performances during the 2018 spring season. The two players anchored the Pirates lineup that hit .297 for the year while averaging 5.24 runs per game. Additionally, Fry was also named to the Region 16 All-Defensive Team for his efforts behind the plate.
Madera, from Willemstad, Curacao, hit .422 for the year on 86 hits (a new school record) and scored 54 runs (another school record). He drove in 31 runs plus hit 3 homers on the season. "Alex had a really nice year at the plate for us. His presence in the lineup will be missed next year," commented Coach Hillerman of his departing shortstop. Madera is signed to a national letter of intent to continue his baseball career at the University of Central Missouri, a NCAA DII powerhouse, in the fall. UCM will be getting a smooth fielding shortstop that holds NCMC career records for hits (152) and runs scored (101) plus ranks 2nd in batting average (.386), 4th in RBIs (71), and 5th in homeruns (7).
Catching 273.2 innings for the Pirates, Fry was a true ironman and team leader for NCMC. His outstanding defense plus solid offensive numbers really set this sophomore from Lawrence, KS, apart. He allowed only 1 passed ball on the year while throwing out 25 of 58 would be base stealers. "Jared was outstanding for us in every aspect of the game. His desire to be the best possible player he can be allowed him to really improve during his two years with us and will serve him well as he continues his baseball career," detailed Hillerman. Jared is committed to play for NCAA Division II Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC. Offensively, Jared hit .331 with 3 homeruns, 28 runs and 28 RBIs.
