Baseball Splits Weekend Series With State Fair CC

The NCMC Pirates split a four game set with State Fair Community College over the weekend.  On Saturday at Burleigh Grimes Field, NCMC took a 10-0 win in the opener but fell 5-4 in the second game.  Sunday in Sedalia, the Pirates again took the front end of the doubleheader in an offensive affair 17-14 but couldn't match the Roadrunners offense in game two losing 11-1.  On the year, the Pirates are now 15-18 and have a region record of 9-11.

"I feel we were the more talented team and should have taken at least three out of the four games against State Fair.  However, they have been playing region teams tough," commented Coach Hillerman of the weekend series.

Earning victories on the mound for the Pirates were starter Kylan Easley, 4-2 on the year, and reliever Wyatt Thomas, 1-0 with 2 saves.  The Pirates also got a strong start from Blake Collister on Saturday, pitching 6.2 innings allowing 3 earned runs in the no-decision.

Offensively, the Pirates were led by Derek Hussey who hit .471, scoring 3 runs while driving in 5.  Jared Fry, Austin Satterfield, Connor Quick, and Enrique Madera each hit over .400 on the weekend for the Pirates as well.  Quinsly Balentien provided 2 homeruns in the series.  "Offensively, we did some things well but our consistency from game to game was lacking.  To me, this goes back to mental approach at the plate and we have to make better in-game adjustments," remarked Coach Hudlow.

"Overall, I thought we played pretty well offensively plus pitched to our capabilities.  However, defensively we really had some lapses that especially hurt is in the final game of the series.  Anytime you make seven errors in a game, you can't expect to win," added Coach Suttenfield.  On the weekend, the Pirates committed a total of 13 errors.

Tuesday the Pirates are back in action at home against MCC-Longview.  The Lakers are 14-11 on the year.
