Sweep By Jefferson College Drops Pirates To 4-8 In Region Play

The Pirates got swept in their series with Region 16 power Jefferson College.  In day one, the Pirates fell 9-3 and 11-3.  For day two, which had to be moved to St. Joseph due wet conditions, Jefferson won 7-3 and 13-1.  "They are a very talented team that is also playing with a lot of confidence," commented Coach Hillerman of JeffCo's success.

"In three of the four games, the starting pitchers for Jefferson were throwing in the low 90's with breaking pitches they commanded for strikes.  We simply couldn't string together enough good at bats against them to really put the pressure on needed to win," remarked Coach Hudlow.  However, the Pirate's Enrique Madera did have a solid series hitting .300 with a double and a triple, 2 runs and 3 RBIs.  The Pirates as a whole hit .181 in the series with 41 strikeouts.

On the mound, the Pirates got solid starts from sophomore Kylan Easley and freshman Trae Brownell.  "Both of those guys pitched well enough to keep us in the game and they deserved better outcomes," stated Coach Suttenfield.  Also pitching well was freshman Lucas Hampton, who allowed 1 earned run over 4 innings of work, split between two relief appearances.

The Pirates are now 10-13 overall and 4-8 in region play.
