Saturday saw a Sophomore Day split for the Lady Pirate's softball team against region foe Jefferson College. Coach Richman's squad dropped the opener 10-8 in extra innings but came back to down the Vikings 5-3 in the finale. Earning the win for the Lady Pirates in the second game was sophomore Kelly Warford who improved her record to 5-3 on the year. Sophomore Allison Hilsabeck (15-8) took the tough luck loss in the first game.
Offensively, sophomore Rachael Balke had a nice performance in game one going 3-4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI's. Both Balke and sophomore Jaclyn Weydert hit homeruns as well. In the lower scoring second game, sophomores Jessica Stupar and Amber Austin each went 2-3 with Stupar scoring 2 runs and Austin totaling 2 RBI's.
Ceremonies were held between games for the Lady Pirate sophomores. Eleven of the rosters fifteen players were recognized as this year's team was very sophomore heavy. "It was a great day to honor a great group of sophomores. These girls have put a lot of time and effort into becoming great softball players and it was an honor to be part of their sophomore day as well as getting a great win against a good region team," commented Coach Richman.
Next up for the Lady Pirates will be a home doubleheader Monday against Southwestern Community College. These games will complete the regular season ahead of this weekend's region tournament.
