Pirates T2nd @ Bent Tree Collegiate

Pirates Men's Golf placed T2 of 7 with a team score of +45 in the recent Bent Tree Intercollegiate held in Council Bluffs, IA.  The Pirates shot 303, 296, and 310 in the three rounds.  Winning the event was host Iowa Western Community College at +11.  "To finally crack 300 was a goal of ours from the start.  Now it's time to reevaluate where we are and set a new bar.  We're a team that should consistently be at 300 and below, we just need to find a combination of guys that can do it every time we tee it up.  Each guy's game is suited better to a particular style of course, it's time I start looking at that a little deeper," commented Coach Sager.

Lewis Hopkinson was the highest placing Pirate.  He shot +1 for the three rounds which was good for a 3rd place finish.  "Lewis was hitting the ball as good as I've ever seen him hit it.  Realistically, he was two or three swings away from really going low," detailed Sager of Hopkinson's efforts.

Other Pirate scores were T9th Scott Swayne (+10), T12th Cody Glenn (+12), 26th Lathan Croy (+25) and 37th James Gardner (+36).

"Scott has gotten his game back on track.  He's starting to work harder off the course in preparation for these types of events.  As he continues to get stronger, his scores will drop.  These courses are so long, especially when they're wet, you can't make a living hitting fairway woods into the par 4's.  He's scrappy and handy around the greens, so he's always giving himself chances," said Sager of Swayne.

The Pirates still have four tournaments left on their fall schedule.  Their next competition will be the Southwestern Community College hosted "War at the Moor" on October 5th.  "We're heading into a stretch of tough tournaments.  Iowa Western was a really good event for us to use in preparation.  We're looking forward to the challenge and try to improve our scoring average against really good competition," concluded Sager.
